These young people suffer from additional barriers such as poor transport, lack of services and few job opportunities. The Works! programme is embedded in the community and our staff liaise with local employers to equip young people on the programme with the skills and experience that local business owners are looking for.
The Works! project is based in Galashiels but is open to young people from areas of deprivation across the Scottish Borders.
By acting as a community hub for jobs, the Works! programme opens up new employment opportunities in rural areas by providing job matching for young people and local employer networks.
Over 10 weeks, Works! delivers a mix of group activities, one-to-one mentoring, skills and personal development training. The emphasis is on personalised planning so that participants move into the job or training programme that is right for them.
Since Works! was launched in the Borders in 2013, we are proud that it has supported over 120 local young people with 95% completing the course and 70% of ‘completers’ moving into employment, further education or training.
Once participants get a job, we continue to support them and their employers for at least a year to ensure that success is long term.
